#1 – Hire a Professional – One of the best ways to ensure you have a safe deck is to enlist the professional guidance and expertise of a professional builder or carpenter. A professional can help ensure that you are building the best deck for your property, using the best wood and materials for your climate, and guide your design to be the most cost effective and useful space that meet your needs. #2 – Follow Your Local Building Codes – Another thing a professional can do is help you understand and navigate the building codes for decks in your area. In order to add a deck to your home, you may have to submit plans, following certain building code requirements for where you live, and ensure you are not disturbing utility lines or water pipes. Your nominated builder will be able to advise you of your local regulations. #3 – Install Railing or a Balustrade – If your deck is over 1.0m off the ground or your have stairs it is always a good idea and part of the building code to have an approved handrail / barrier to ensure the safety of people who use your deck. #4 – Clean and Finish Your Deck – One of the things that many deck owners overlook is the importance of regular and well applied oil/stain to their deck. Decks exposed to the sun will require more regular maintenance than decks that are fully covered by a patio or roof. It is important to clean your deck regularly including clearing debris and ensuring damp areas can dry out. #5 – Have Your Deck Inspected Annually – Water damage, rusted or damaged fittings, rotting of the wood, and even insects can wreak havoc on your deck. It is important to have it inspected annually to ensure it is still a safe place for you and your family. Identifying issues with the wood, screws, or supports early can help you repair the issues quickly and more easily, ensuring your deck stays safe and lasts longer, which can save you money in the long run. So whether you are starting an outdoor improvement project or just looking to improve your current deck space, taking these 5 tips for a safe deck into consideration will help you develop a wonderful outdoor living space that you and your friends and family are sure to enjoy for years. They present no splinters, are slip-resistant, and our Aluminium decks stay cooler than other materials so you can feel comfortable allowing your children to run across the deck barefoot. Of course, you want to make sure your family is safe from other sources, too. Here are a few tips for making your deck an oasis of safety.

I love that you talked that navigating and understanding the building codes for your deck is necessary to prevent legal issues. I have a cousin who is hoping to have a deck for us to have a place for our family gatherings, and he asked me yesterday if I had any idea what would be the best option to do. I like this informative article, I'll be sure to tell him that he can consult a trusted deck contractor as they can provide more information about the process.

I appreciate what you said about getting a contractor to help with the support screws. I need to get a deck built this summer. That way I can host parties in the backyard.

It got me when you said that we should have a railing instead which would also need to follow building codes, especially when your deck is about 1.0m off the ground. I will keep that in mind because I plan to get a deck installed this year now that I have the budget. It will be a great addition to the backyard and for the pool, so I hope to find stainless steel handrail manufacturers to choose what design to get as well.

I couldn't agree more with these tips! Hiring a professional is essential – their expertise ensures a deck that's not only visually appealing but also structurally sound. Local building codes might seem complex, but they exist for everyone's safety. A proper railing is a no-brainer, especially if your deck is elevated. And yes, maintenance matters! Regular cleaning and finishing help your deck stand up to the elements. Lastly, an annual inspection is a proactive way to keep your deck safe in the long term.
